An electoral projection model released this week forecasts Vice President JD Vance defeating Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 339 electoral votes to 199 in a hypothetical 2028 presidential matchup.
The analysis, published by election forecaster “Election Time,” maps out a scenario where Ocasio-Cortez secures the Democratic nomination. The projection suggests Vance would win decisively across the Midwest, South and Mountain West regions.
The Forecast Model
According to the analysis, Vance builds a base of 188 secure electoral votes across Republican strongholds including Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, the Dakotas, Kansas, Oklahoma and the Deep South. The model shows Ohio, Vance’s home state, shifting to solid Republican after Trump’s performance in recent cycles.
The projection places Ocasio-Cortez with just 98 electoral votes from West Coast states, Hawaii, Vermont, Massachusetts and Maine’s 1st District. “She doesn’t even crack 100,” the analyst noted in the forecast.
Florida, North Carolina, Arizona and Maine’s 2nd District would push Vance to 246 electoral votes, according to the model, while Ocasio-Cortez would gain Oregon, Colorado and portions of the Northeast.
Midwest And Blue Wall Analysis
The forecast indicates traditional Democratic strongholds in the Midwest would shift Republican. Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania are projected as lean-red for Vance following recent electoral trends.
Minnesota is forecast to flip after 56 years of supporting Democratic presidential candidates, while Virginia is modeled as tilt-red. “Given Vance’s Midwestern appeal,” the analyst explained the regional shift.
What This Means
The projection reflects voting patterns from recent elections and demographic shifts, particularly among Hispanic voters and in Midwest regions. The model suggests progressive candidates face challenges in swing states and formerly competitive areas.
Ocasio-Cortez has not announced a presidential campaign. The analysis remains speculative about 2028 nomination outcomes.
